New Teen Driver on the Road? Check Out These Rules

Your teen just got their driver’s license. Even though this is an exciting time, it can also be a scary time for you and your teen. Before your young driver hits the road on their own, make sure they know these driving rules:

Teen Driver

All teen drivers should know the standard rules of the road. These include things like don’t text and drive, wear your seatbelt, and follow the speed limit. You may also want to encourage your teen to listen to music at a set volume while they drive.

Next, limit the number of passengers in your teen’s car when they’re driving. Some states have laws already established, but if your state doesn’t, make sure your teen doesn’t have too many passengers in the car with them. This can cause dangerous distractions. It is safest for your teen to have no teen passengers in their vehicle at all, but you may allow them to drive with one or two friends under certain circumstances.

About 40 percent of fatal teen crashes happen at night. Think about restricting your child from driving at night. Some laws ban teens from driving after sunset, 8 p.m., or midnight, but consider a curfew for your child if your local government doesn’t have one established.

Once you tell your teen the rules of the road, make sure they understand you. Communicate clearly and allow for conversation between you and your teen regarding these rules. If your teen breaks these rules, follow through on punishments to let them know you’re serious.
